Technological innovation in the healthcare and medical industry helps to save lives and improve patient experience. However, in some countries, businesses face significant challenges in bringing the best technological innovations to the market. Large initial investments and extended time to market force leaders in the industry to hone their insight into the market in order to succeed. Mr. Wong Yoon Chan is one such leader whose strong understanding of the industry led him to set up MedexOne Sdn Bhd in 2006 to offer a breakthrough Clinical Management System incorporating Wacom’s DTI-520 interactive pen display.
MedexOne began humbly with just a handful of people focusing on development and sales. In 2006, few companies were willing to develop solutions for the healthcare industry because the market size seemed uncertain. Wong entered the market as a pioneer believing in both the potential of the market and in the potential of the technology to help save lives. Gathering information from medical clinics and professionals, he began to develop a customized information systems solution for the Malaysia’s healthcare industry.
After much research of the relevant technologies from countries with advanced medical technology, Wong chose the Wacom DTI-520 interactive pen display to be integrated as a critical component of MedexOne’s breakthrough Clinical Management System solution, CliniSys. Wong commented, “Medical practitioners can easily computerize their operations with the Wacom solution making work easier.” MedexOne is the first company in Malaysia to take advantage of the sophisticated pen technology offered in Wacom products to create an advanced medical software solution.
Coupled with a unique business proposition, MedexOne was accorded with MSC Malaysia (formerly Multimedia Super Corridor, www.msc.com.my) status in December 2006 by the Malaysian government in recognition of its contribution to IT development in the country. Today MedexOne has more than 20 people on staff and has to outsource certain work during peak periods. In addition, MedexOne is the first company to form a strategic alliance with Pharmaniaga to sponsor free Clinical Management software. As of early 2008, more than 200 clinics across Malaysia are using the CliniSys solution, which has been seamlessly integrated with the Wacom DTI-520.

CliniSys with DTI-520 integration improves clinic work efficiency
CliniSys is a Clinical Management System (CMS) optimized for the full automation of a clinic’s business operations. The system aims to make management of the clinic more efficient, thus allowing more time for medical professionals to focus their attention on patient care. General practitioners use Wacom’s DTI-520 to input data and share medical information with their patients during consultation. CliniSys and DTI-520 enable these medical professionals to instantly retrieve a patient’s record from the system reducing the usage of paper, folders and cabinet space to store the records.
At the clinic dispensaries, prescriptions written out by the doctor on the DTI-520 are sent electronically to the nurses who prepare and dispense the patient’s medication. Digitization of a clinic’s workflow greatly minimizes errors since no paperwork is passed around. It also accelerates the archival and retrieval of patient records, and reduces administrative processing time, freeing doctors up to see more patients. The overall result is better patient service, lower operating costs and increased profitability.
CliniSys has successfully addressed problems faced by doctors in the past such as difficulty in keying information via a keyboard. During consultation doctors use diagrams and images in their explanation, and make notes on the images. Keyboard-only input systems resulted in long consultation times as doctors struggled to simultaneously type in accurate descriptions and interact with the patients.
After the DTI-520 was introduced, doctors were able to utilize an electronic record system as they would a normal pen and paper. Interaction with patients became more natural and consultation time was utilized more efficiently. Doctors could mark and write comments directly onto images and diagrams, and share diagnoses and treatment planning with patients via the DTI-520. The interface of CliniSys takes advantage of the DTI-520’s on-screen input to make the entire process as convenient as possible for doctors. The final result at clinics that implemented CliniSys with Wacom’s DTI-520 was better customer experience and improved quality of service. |
