For the last 24 years, Rohit Suri has been a major influence on the India’s photography industry, and his name as well as that of his photography studio, Studio V18, commands respect among his peers. A mentor to aspiring artists, he has also had the privilege of photographing the rich and famous from former American president Bill Clinton to Sahara Shri Subrata Roy and Bollywood’s sexy superstar Priyanka Chopra. Let’s explore how this respected photographer captures beauty in the frames of his photographs.

Rohit Suri has been a user of Wacom’s Intuos line of pen tablets for the last 6 years and has recently made the switch to Intuos3 in his photography work. However, unlike most photographers, his primary use for the pen tablet is not for the retouching of photos, but rather for the planning of photo shoots with clients.

When one is photographing such important and time-constrained subjects as the former President of America, the photo shoots must go exactly as planned. The photographer cannot call the client to return for another shoot if objects are out of place, or the background is wrong.
So, this respected photographer has developed a workflow at his Studio V18 to take control of the planning process. Based on his ideas, studio staff creates storyboards of the photo shoot with clients in various scenes. These story board sketches are presented to the client before the photo shoot. Photographer and client decide on the best environment, poses, props, etc. to frame the client in the best possible way. |

Those unfamiliar with this unique process might question the necessity of using a pen tablet. The response, as we learned when visiting Studio V18, was that inevitably changes must be made to the sketches. These changes are made much faster on the computer with the pen tablet than by erasing and redrawing the entire scene on paper. Furthermore, several versions can be saved in case clients change their mind. The images also can be easily and quickly sent via email to clients in for confirmation. When the client visits in person, the images can always be quickly printed out for the consultation. V18 takes full advantage of the versatility of digital technology. |

Rohit Suri places a great deal of importance of communication--between himself and his clients as well as between man and tool. He appreciates the smoothness and naturalness of the new Intuos3 which allows him to forget that what he is using is a digital tool. The performance allows him to concentrate less on the tool and more on the subject. |
