Comments from Wacom:

Asuka111 is actually the cute award winner of the Wacom Anime Girl contest held last summer. He finally reached to the top of 739 great entries! This artwork had an enormous popularity among Wacom staff when we were selecting the winners. The Dragon and soldiers coming out from the adventure world automatically pulled me into the story thinking of how this girl is going to be involved in an adventure after school in a library! I like the idea that everything from the book is mini sized. The mini characters are so cute.

[Interview with Asuka111]

Q1. Where did the idea come from?

The idea accidentally pop up in my head during the meeting with my friend. We met at some cafe in the shopping complex. Then, I saw a woman picking a book from the shelf in the bookstore around that area. That moment and the scenery caught my mind. So, I quickly sketched the idea in my sketchbook. It's a story of a girl and a magical book! That's the starting point.
Later on, I spent a lot of day for developing the story as well as the visual. I believe that an illustration should tell a story or convey an emotion that the creator would like to express. It definitely a huge plus for the artwork.

Q2. I'm curious about the rest of the story. Do you have an idea what the story is going on?

Actually, I’m not thinking that far. But, It ‘s fun to thinking about it. It may develop into something epic. Endless possibility here.

Q3. Which parts are hardest to draw?

I think it is a background. It is not something that I draw so often.

Q4. Which software/hardware do you use usually?

I use iMac (Late 2006 Model) with Wacom Intuos 3 6”x11” graphic tablet. As for software, I use Photoshop CS4.

Comments from Wacom:

Her depressive look is mysterious but it's still very girly and cute. I spotted this artwork because of its unique use of color. The purple color gives us the impression of a more gloomy atmosphere and sets up a more mysterious feeling. I wondered whose hand this is...?

[Interview with Myr]

Q1. Where did the idea come from? Please tell us about the artwork!

When I was searching for inspiration for this contest, I immediately wanted something to do with hands and flowers. These are my two favorite object to draw. The basic concept is quite simple, it's about a flower you could hold in your hand, and gave you happiness. However, since I associate that flower means spring and I know the coming spring brought happiness after a long winter, I decided to explore the concept more by making the flower as a little fairy that represent spring, and the hand represent the winter that guiding the sprout to wake up and grow. I use highly contrast colors to emphasize the magical feeling we feel when the flowery season arrive.

Q2. Which parts are hardest to draw?

You might laugh, but it's the background. I had to find a photo reference for the yellow flower, and it took me quite sometime to decide whether I should go with plain pink and cream, or adding some bluish-green accent to balancing the composition. I asked several friends of mine regarding this, and all of them pointed the later. I'm glad to took up their advice.

Q3. You work as a professional illustrator. What is your dreams?

I work full-time as a 2D artist for an animation studio here in Jakarta. My dream to make my own graphic novels and make world-class animation like Ghibli does, using traditional folk tales my country has.

Q4. Which software/hardware do you use usually?

I am so crazy about PainTool SAI now, but usually I did the lineart manually using pencil, and using Photoshop for coloring part. For hardware, I own an old MacBook and a small Wacom Graphire at home, but luckily I get a Wacom Cintiq in my studio to do the work. :)
