Wacom Anime Girl contest

Artists in Asia Pacific truly love their Anime Girls. Big thanks to the more than 400 of you who entered the contest. We found so many of the entries to be nice, cute, and highly detailed with a sense of creativity. Ultimately, we selected the winners based purely on the artwork itself and surprisingly, three of the winners came from Thailand. The "Land of Smiles" is also the land of talented anime artists.

Honorable mention:

With so many great entries, picking four winners was very difficult. Here are two entries that were favorites of the judges, but just missed being selected.

Comments from Wacom:
If you look closely, you will notice that the anime girl's hair and clothes are goldfish. And, the fish and the girl share similar expressions. So cute and clever. We also liked the beautiful red color and the fantastic world that the artist created.

Q1. Tell us about your winning artwork. Where did the idea come from?

At first when I saw the topic of this competition, I thought I would draw a picture in a colorful and lively style. For about the main idea of this picture, which is goldfish, I was inspired when I went to a hospital. Because, personally, I really do not like to go to a hospital because the atmosphere and the smell in there make me depressed. Thus, I was impressed when I saw a tank of goldfish in the hallway of the hospital. Who will believe when I looked at that very simple fish tank, it took all negative feeling in my mind away? In that tank, there were plenty of goldfish swimming very lively. The liveliness of those goldfish became the main idea of my artwork.

When I knew that my artwork won the prize, I was very happy and surprised. Because actually, when I recognized that there were many great artworks were sent to this competition, I thought I might not win this prize. I would like to thank every staff of this competition who arranged a great competition, every competitor who sent really good artwork and, definitely, those goldfish who inspired and helped me out from those bad feeling.

Q2. Which parts are hardest to draw?

For this job, in drawing, there was no part that was quite hard. Resulting from the topic and style were the way that I specialized. The difficult of this job was how to organize the character and goldfish appropriately. That was the part that I had to spend a lot of time to complete because I wanted this picture not only had a movement feeling, but also was not too crowd or too clear.

Q3. Which software/hardware do you use usually?

Adobe Photoshop and graphic tablet Wacom Intous 3.

Q4. What is your favorite anime/manga?

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga by Hirohiko Araki. For this manga, I like the way he drew, which was pretty unique, and the story, which was so extraordinary and creative. Those make it very interesting. You cannot guess what is the end or even what will happen next!!!

2nd Place
Prize: Intuos4 Medium tablet

Comments from Wacom:
Hearts, spades, diamonds and clubs - all of the suits are represented. We especially loved the cute expressions on all of the faces and admired the concept of this piece.

Q1. Tell us about your winning artwork. Where did the idea come from?

This piece of my work reflects a typical day in a life in which most people would work, rest and play. And when it comes to playing, everyone is so familiar with playing cards which has become my main concept and of course all characters represented here are from a deck of cards. The Queens, as a whole, represented the sweetness of youths, fun playing, ever challenge and be happy no matter what the outcome is. So I've chosen The Queen of Hearths to be my feature character. Red heart would indicate the delicatecy, love and ability of taking up any challenges representing by the Jack and King while the 4 Jokers look on. The Queen is holding a nine of hearts card which might have the highest single numerical value but would that be enough to win at all times. Yet she is so content with what she has. To her, she works, rests and plays like the rest of us but win or lose. she know there will always be tomorrow.

Q2. Which parts are hardest to draw?

The most hardest part to do is to colour the background that would make the main character stand out when density of colours almost the same. Composition is a little bit tricky because there are many characters in the picture

Q3. Which software/hardware do you use usually?

I use photoshop cs3 and my wacom graphire 4 tablet.

Q4. What is your favorite anime/manga?

I like One Piece very much and all of Hayao Miyazaki’s films.

Everything is so detailed and cute. There's the hat, the skeleton bones with the band-aid, and even the small gremlin hiding in the girl's skirt. She's a very artistic witch, drawing with her magical powers.

Q1. Tell us about your winning artwork. Where did the idea come from?

I developed from my old character's concept from the past. The original idea of this picture is the magician girl who can use her creative power to use magic and spell.

Q2. Which parts are hardest to draw?

Personally, I think it's the face. Because, it is the most important part of the picture. If there is a little change it can change all over the emotion of the characer.

Q3. Which software/hardware do you use usually?

I used Photoshop CS4 / Painter on iMac. For tablet, I use Wacom Intuos 3 tablet.

Q4. What is your favorite anime/manga?

I'm fan of "EVANGELION". My favourite character is Asuka. That's where my penname come from.

Heroine award
Prize: Bamboo Fun Medium tablet

Title: Desert Rose
Winner: Snowfly
Country: Singapore

We appreciated this heroine because we could all feel her power and inner fortitude. We had no doubt that she could save us from any situation. Also, if you look closely you can see that this piece was draw carefully with great attention to detail.

Q1. Tell us about your winning artwork. Where did the idea come from?

From my Fallout 3 character. I was outfitting the folks in Megaton with better clothes, armor, and weapons, carrying the stuff across the wasteland from town to town. Desert Rose is just an extension of that idea.

Q2. Which parts are hardest to draw?

I still have a lot to learn about poses, composition, and lighting. The original background had some run down buildings but I lacked the practice to pull it off, so I opted for the blurry desert instead.

Q3. Which software/hardware do you use usually?

Photoshop and my old Wacom, and Silo occassionally for 3D block-ins.

Q4. What is your favorite anime/manga?

I'm not much of an anime/mange aficionado, but I like pretty much everything Miyazaki puts out. For visuals, Tekkonkinkreet, Paprika, 5CM Per Second, Blood the Last Vampire and Afro Samurai ooze a lot of style.
