Featured Artsit: Waheed Nasir

Waheed Nasir from Karachi, Pakistan is a fine artist, 2D and 3D artist, a musician, a teacher, and on top of that, heavily involved in growing online digital art communities such as www.cgexpanse.com/, www.cgtantra.com and www.3dtotal.com. Currently an artist at production/animation house, Post Amazers, he is also active in the world of fine art with 5 solo exhibitions of his paintings and drawings as well as more than 20 groups shows both in Pakistan and overseas.

You seem to be very active in online communities. Why?

I work as a texture artist, digital painter, matte painter for 2D and 3D art jobs, but for my personal work I enjoy making digital paintings which I then post onto many graphics websites. I'm glad when people like my work very much and every now and then I do get awards for my work from these websites. Recently I was awarded the Cover/Front Page Award at cgtalk.com for my painting "Still life with roses and satin" (see below).

Why do you paint digitally? What software do you use?

Regarding software that I use, I paint in Photoshop, Painter and Artrage. And a Wacom Tablet of course.

As a fine artist for my personal work, I love to paint my digital paintings, and it do them just the way I create my real oils. By the grace of God, my work has a distinct look that people recognize right away-- that is my work. I love to paint my digital paintings in an impressionist style using unblended, visible brushwork, just as I do on my oil paintings. I use suggestions and impressions of things, created by thick, casual paint strokes.

What are your subjects?

Whatever excites me -- be it landscape, still life, portrait, cityscape, etc. I do paint in realistic style as well when I'm in that particular mood and for that I paint in Photoshop. For all my digital work, I use a tablet and my paintings are done from scratch, free-hand as if using real brushes and paint.

What are your influences?

Influences and inspirations have always been paintings, drawings and sketches (real ones) from the past. Some of my favorite masters and especially impressionists are Caravaggio, Manet, Monet, and Renoir. There are many others as well, but these names just came to my mind right now. Another very important, big influence on my work has always been my painting teacher, the late Bashir Mirza (known to most as BM). A renowned artist of Pakistan.

For matte paintings, I work in a very realistic manner. Because they are used as backgrounds for 3D work, they must be complete together with lighting and mood, a particular atmosphere and so on.

To view my traditional artwork and other digital (2D, 3D) work, kindly visit www.waheednasir.com. You can even download my guitar playing as well from the Music section there.

Still life with roses and satin

Winner of the Cover/Front Page Award at www.cgtalk.com

I was in a strong mood for an oil painting (on canvas) when I painted this digital piece, so I handled it in a way very similar way to what I would've done with my oils. I even forgot in the middle of the painting process that I was sitting in front of my computer, with a pen (a Wacom tablet), in my hand.

I went for suggestions with casual, spontaneous brushwork, though I kept the setting/environment very traditional/classical. I put in enough detail to portray the scene that I had in my mind. My goal here, was to capture various kinds of textures and their look/feel (softness, hardness, reflective, shiny, glossy). And I really enjoyed doing every bit of it...:). Self-visualized and composed without reference. Painted in Artrage with a Wacom tablet.

Fantasy Environment - Dream
Fantasy Environment - Dream

This is a concept for a fantasy environment, a supernatural mysterious world, "Dream". I was quite satisfied with what I got in the end, exactly the image I had in my mind. Done in Painter and Photoshop with a Wacom tablet.

Memory lane
Memory lane

A digitally painted portrait of an unforgettable moment for me from my yesteryears. I kept it simple and elegant, yet painterly. I was happy to achieve the certain atmosphere/mood and emotion that I intended. In particular, the palette was used to enhance the sentimentalism of the scene. A candid look and a feeling of some activity was deliberately included. I painted this in Artrage using a Wacom tablet completely from scratch.

Heaven on earth
Heaven on earth

A digitally painted landscape/waterscape, created in Photoshop and Painter using a Wacom tablet. This is a painting from my series-in-progress on environmental/atmospheric paintings. I consulted only a couple of landscape/beaches references (while making preparatory sketches) before attempting this. What u are seeing here is entirely my own composition. My objective here was to capture the beauty and purity of nature. Nature's wonderful gift to us.

Industrial - 24/7(part2)
Industrial - 24/7(part2)

My second painting from the series "Industrial - 24/7". I painted a similar mood, time and situation as my first version with the same sense of industrial grim and nature but with more gothic feel. This was done in Painter and Photoshop using a Wacom tablet. I consulted construction images for reference although this is my own composition. A lot was going on in my mind, but I decided to keep those ideas for the next one.

Industrial - 24/7(part3)

This is the third painting I did for my work in progress, the series "Industrial - 24/7". Here, I take you inside where I have portrayed the tough life of industrial workers. Everyday, they face incidents and mishaps like, blasts, flying sparks and sparking wires, etc. as a normal part of their work. Painted in Artrage, using a tablet. Self-visualised and composed.

Nature - Trail
Nature - Trail
A recently painted landscape, "Nature - Trail", created in Artrage. It was done in a pure impressionistic manner with brushwork that is visible, unblended and casual. I really enjoyed working on this, and kept it painterly as if it were a traditional work. My inspiration came from a few memories of village scenes I had experienced. This is my own composition, self-visualized. Viewing it from a distance of about 4 to 5 ft. would be cool.

In Abaaya
In Abaaya

This is an Artrage -- Wacom digital portrait of mine created from scratch (from memory and self-visualization). The inspiration for this work came from a charcoal sketch that I did of a friend and student of mine. Though it is painted with expressive, unblended brushstrokes, the composition, lighting and setting is very much done in a neo-classical manner. The model here is in Abaaya and in a translucent veil, in a relaxing mood, turns her head slightly and makes an eye contact. My goal was to capture the mood at that moment.

A still life painting created in Artrage with a tablet, and treated with the spontaneous, visible brushwork that I love. No reference used.

Roses -3
Roses -3

The inspiration for this came from one of my own oil paintings. This time I went further ahead in exploring the world of chiaroscuro...the manner that I always enjoy. I kept my stokes fairly casual and suggestive, but at the same incorporated much detail in a painterly way. Painted this in Artrage from memory. My goal was to achieve what's beyond the apparent, what has to be felt, the air, the mood, the environment.

Brushes, turps and a paint tube

A simple still life painted in Artrage and treated in Painter. All visualized, done from scratch using a Wacom tablet. Went for suggestions rather than putting details, for me it says it all.

Sculptor's home
Sculptor's home

A digital painting done in Photoshop and with a tablet. The idea and inspiration for this came while browsing through some sculpture/hill images. This is my own composition and I am quite satisfied with the final appearance. My objectives included portraying natural rock formation, a feeling of home, light, love and roughness (natural surfaces) at the same time.

Wilderness
Wilderness

This is my impression of a tropical atmosphere -- wild, uncultivated, but still beautiful in its own right. In fact, it is more artistic (for me), than the subject that usually gets more attention from us, humans. Only vegetation references were consulted. Done in Photoshop using a tablet. Intentionally kept loose and suggestive.
