Featured Artsit: Rommel Bundalian

Introducing Rommel Bundalian, a young, award-winning photographer and digital artist from the Philippines. Introduced to sketching with charcoal and paper in high school, Rommel's subjects covered everything under the sun. Holding his first camera, a Canon Elan 50E, college threw him into the digital world where he followed his artist's eye around the globe. He continues to produce stunning photographs in the Philippines while improving his digital art skills using Photoshop, Painter and Poser. Breathtaking.

1. How long have you been a photographer?
How long have you worked on digital art/painting?

1998 was the year I started out as a photographer, and I realized want to learn more, so I turned my interest to digital imaging. By 2000, I was one of the pioneer students of PCCI (Philippine Center for Creative Imaging) where I studied basic Adobe Photoshop 6. The following year, digital painting took my interest and taught it to myself by using Painter 8.

2. What awards/recognition have you won?

I won the below awards here in the Philippines.
Finalist - 2001 Digital Design Competition - Graphic Expo
1st & 2nd Place-Digital Print of the Year 2001 - IDN ( International Designers Network) Club - Philippines
Grand Prize Winner - 2002 Digital Fine Art Category - Graphic Expo
Grand Prize & 1st Runner Up Winner - 2003 Digital Fine Art Category - Graphic Expo
2004 Master Digital Artist of the Year - IDN Club-Philippines

3. How do you separate your commercial art/photography with more personal/ fine art?

I look at it as the same...It's art, and when it comes to art I'm a perfectionist regardless if it's commercial/personal art. I just make sure that whatever the outcome is, all my art has the same style & quality I am known for.

4. Your work is very versatile, stretching across many genres...why? Do you have a favorite genre?

I always want to stretch out my capabilities, and trying out different genres challenges me to be good in all these areas. Traveling inspires me to do my favorites -- human interest, still life and landscapes in photographs, and digital painting of course.

5. What software do you work with? Which Wacom tablets do you use? Which cameras do you use?

I'm currently using Wacom Intuos2, together with Adobe Photoshop & Corel Painter as well as Poser. I use a Canon 20D camera with my favorite zoom lens 70-200mm 2.8L and 14mm 2.8L wide.

6. What are your plans for the future?

I want to continue mastering the art of digital painting and become an internationally known artist like John Derry & Bruce Hamilton Dorn.

DIGITAL EVOLUTION
DIGITAL EVOLUTION

This is the artwork that best described me because this shows how I evolved as an artist and using my own hand as a subject. When a local magazine (Creative Spark Magazine) held a competition in our club where I won and this was the Cover Page of their first issue. I used Intuos2, Photoshop and Painter.
