Adjustments Panel

CS4 introduces a new method of adjusting images that is more intuitive and natively "non-destructive" than previous methods. Adjustments can now be applied visually through the Adjustments Panel, a one-stop shop for all adjustments. This method limits the number of clicks and movements - just click on the desired adjustment in the Adjustments panel and the adjustment settings appear. Depending on the specific adjustment (such as Levels, Curves or Exposure) this panel also offers preset adjustments for easy application via a drop-down menu. You can even create your own presets. Finally, making the actual adjustment to your image is simplified through on-canvas adjustments. Simply select the on-canvas icon in the Adjustments panel, place your pen on the area of the image you wish to adjust and drag left or right. The results are visible in real time, directly in the Adjustments panel.

Vibrance Adjustment

Not to be overshadowed by the introduction of the Adjustments panel is the new adjustment: Vibrance. Brought over from Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Vibrance gives users greater control over the saturation of color while preserving delicate tones, such as foliage and skin colors. Vibrance is a perfect adjustment for application with a pen tablet (for example, selectively increasing the saturation of a patch of flowers in a landscape.)

Dodge, Burn and Sponge Tools

Other tools that benefit from the ease and fluency of application with the Wacom pen that have been updated in CS4, include the Dodge, Burn and Sponge tools. The performance of the Dodge and Burn tools has been improved by allowing them to preserve the tonal quality of the image while spot-correcting exposure; a welcome improvement for those seeking to make down-and-dirty tonal adjustments. These tools work especially well when subtly applied with a Wacom pressure-sensitive pen.

Clone Stamp and Healing Brush Tools

The Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools are essential for retouching images. Getting optimal results with these tools is greatly improved through a live preview of the source pixels at the cursor. This will be especially appealing to Cintiq users. The live preview makes it easier to precisely replace or heal specific areas of an image. If you prefer the older method, the live preview can be turned off in the Clone Source panel by checking Show Overlay.

Masks Panel

Layer masks have long been staples in the retoucher's tool kit. The new Masks panel makes key mask functionality accessible (and visible) in one place. Creation, manipulation, visibility, opacity, feathering and even deletion can all be found here. One of the most effective methods of applying a layer mask is to "paint" it on using a pressure-sensitive pen. For example, with the brush tool selected and the Opacity control set for Pen Pressure (in the Brushes panel), you can selectively paint the mask controlling the opacity of the mask by varying the level of pressure.

Integration with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

Professionals and advanced photographers are quickly adopting a combined Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® and Photoshop workflow. Images adjusted in Lightroom, such as those edited with a Wacom tablet and its pressure-sensitive retouch brush, are easily transferred back and forth between Photoshop and Lightroom. Additionally, Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw share the same underlying technology.

New Capabilities for 3D Editing and Compositing

With Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended you can now paint directly on 3D models using the full suite of pressure-sensitive painting and editing tools and your Wacom pen. Additionally, you can convert 2D layers to 3D objects.

Creative Pro Online Service

Adobe offers a number of online resources. Photoshop CS4 gives you built-in access to Adobe ConnectNow, a service that enables users to share their screens and collaborate in real time with colleagues, clients, and peers-regardless of their locations. You can use your Wacom pen to annotate directly on an open image in Photoshop, or you can use the whiteboard functionality in Adobe Connect Now

Canvas Rotation

The new rotate-to-view tool allows you to rotate your canvas to any angle. While you can easily rotate a Wacom tablet or Cintiq like a sketchpad, this new tool offers you the ability to quickly rotate your canvas without turning your tablet or changing the position of your body. You can even assign this function to an ExpressKey.
